Teiko Shiotani Memorial Photo Gallery
World-acclaimed photographer Teiko Shiotani
Teiko Shiotani continued to capture the nature and people of the San'in region throughout his life. Through numerous exhibitions in the United States and other countries, his works have been highly acclaimed both in and outside Japan. His home of his birthplace in the town of Kotoura, which faces the Sea of Japan in Tottori Prefecture, has been turned into the Teiko Shiotani Memorial Photo Gallery. The building itself, which dates back to the early Meiji period (1868-1912), is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, and houses a gallery in addition to displays of various cherished items that belonged to the renowned photographer.
Gallery space
The gallery space is designed in a white-tone, modern-Japanese style and repeatedly attracts fans from across the country, with works changing twice a year according to the season.
Beautiful chigai-dana shelf with raden decoration
In a traditional Japanese room on the second floor is an alcove with a chigai-dana, or staggered shelf, decorated in a stunning raden decoration, a style of shell-inlaid lacquerware, made from a variety of exquisite materials.
