Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre, Shizuoka
Learn about Mount Fuji, a symbol of Japan, at the Mt. Fuji World Heritage Centre located in Fujinomiya City, Shizuoka Prefecture, where you can enjoy an unimpeded view of Mount Fuji from the foothills. The magnificent building, which resembles an inverted Mount Fuji, is made from a grid of wood and was designed by Shigeru Ban, a world-renowned architect who was also behind the construction of the Centre Pompidou-Metz in Paris. Even more impressive is the sight of the building reflecting into the water basin in front of it, with the mountain spring water of the basin used in the heating and cooling of the building.
Inside, the 193-meter-long spiral slope extends from the first floor up to the fifth, allowing you to enjoy the exhibits on your way up and experience a simulated climb up Mount Fuji. When you reach the top floor, the real Mount Fuji is seen spread out through the large windows.
Enjoy a quick break with soft-serve ice cream resembling Mount Fuji or light snacks at the first-floor cafe. The sight of Mount Fuji seen through the “torii” gate next to the center is a popular photo spot. A five-minute walk will take you to Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, a shrine dedicated to Mount Fuji.
