Kumono ue no Gallery (Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum)
Yusuhara is a small town spread out among the mountains at an elevation of 1,200 meters in western Kochi Prefecture. On sunny days, you can see all the way from the Pacific Ocean to the Seto Inland Sea, which is why Yusuhara is also known as “Kumono ue no machi (the town above the clouds)”.
Several buildings designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma can be found around Yusuhara, and it feels like the entire town is one giant museum. The beams of the bridge-shaped Kumono ue no Gallery are made from locally sourced cedar and use a traditional construction technique known as “Tokiyo,” which supports the eaves of Japanese architecture. The approach of stacking laminated wood creates a beautiful structure with a lightness that blends in with the surrounding forest.
Embark on a tour of Kengo Kuma-designed buildings scattered around the Kumono ue no Gallery, such as the Yusuhara Town Library. With hiking trails and inviting accommodations, you may want to stay the night and fully take in the architecture amid the mountains.
The building is constructed using a "Tokiyo" wooden temple architectural technique.
