Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha
This shrine stands at the foot of Mount Fuji, a mountain worshipped as a place where gods dwell since ancient times. The shrine itself attracts a lot of visitors not only because it is located on this holy mountain, but also because a god believed to have given birth in a fire is enshrined here, making it the place to pray for the safe delivery of a child.
About a five-minute walk from the main shrine is the Ichino Torii gate (first “torii” gate), a photogenic spot with Mount Fuji seen perfectly lined up between the pillars of the gate. The two-story Inner Shrine is uniquely constructed, with the treasure hall on the second floor built on top of the first-floor roof shaped like Mount Fuji. In addition, approximately 500 cherry trees on the shrine premises are illuminated nightly in March and April every year.
About a three-minute walk from the shrine, a shopping street called Omiya Yokocho offers a variety of tasty local foods, like Fujinomiya Yakisoba fried noodles. In addition, one of the widest and most famous waterfalls in Japan, Shiraito-no-taki, is roughly 30 minutes away by bus. This is a very popular spot for those keen to witness the magical spectacle of rainbows appearing in the spray from the waterfall.
The glorious Inner Shrine was constructed by specialist shrine carpenters assembled from all over Japan.
