Historic Village of Shirakawa-go
Shirakawa-go, one of Japan's most important hidden gems, is a historic village situated in a mountainous area in Ono District, Gifu Prefecture. The main feature of this settlement is the traditional houses with steep “gassho-zukuri” thatched roofs, with people still living in them to this day. Some of these houses are also run as guest houses, offering visitors a surreal experience, including eating meals by an “irori (fire pit)” and marveling at the structure of the roof from the inside.
The Shirakawa-Go Activity Center o8 offers a variety of programs to enjoy the beautiful nature of the area. In summer, you can try SUP (stand-up paddle boarding) on the emerald-green Lake Shiramizu, rafting down a river of snow-melt water and a sauna tent surrounded by magnificent scenery. You can even soak in a natural hot spring bath after sweating your way through some of these activities. In winter, the settlement turns into a wonderland of pure white, with snow covering the mountains and houses, transforming it into a stunning fairy tale landscape.
The scenery completely transforms in winter.
