Odori Park
Enjoy Seasonal Events at Odori Park
Odori Park is an oasis in the middle of Sapporo's business district, with 4,700 trees and plants from 92 species, including lilac and Japanese elm. You can see locals and tourists alike relaxing on its lawns and around its fountains. Odori Park is called a park, but it is actually a street.
In 1871, a firebreak which divided Sapporo into northern and southern districts was built. This firebreak became a street that was initially called Shiribeshi Dori, but it was later renamed as Odori.
The park stretches east to west through the center of Sapporo for 1.5 kilometers. Each section of the park from Nishi 1-chome to Nishi 12-chome features flower beds and grass areas, which combine with fountains and sculptures to offer a variety of visual delights throughout the year.
The Sapporo TV Tower anchors its eastern end while the Sapporo Shiryokan (a building that formerly housed the Sapporo Court of Appeals) stands at its western end, making the park one of Sapporo's best sightseeing spots.
Popular Events throughout the Year
Odori Park, which usually has a relaxing atmosphere, is also the venue for many of Hokkaido's best-known events.
These include the Lilac Festival in the spring, YOSAKOI Soran Festival and beer garden in the summer, the gastronomic Sapporo Autumn Fest in the fall, and the world-renowned Snow Festival in the winter.
Sapporo White Illumination is a light installation set up in Sapporo, and was selected as one of the top three illumination events in Japan by YAKEI Convention & Visitors Bureau, which promotes scenic night views across Japan as tourism resources.
