TOKYO- 18 March 1998 All Nippon Airways Co., Ltd. (ANA), Asia's largest airline, announced today that it has applied to the Ministry of Transport to commence services from Osaka to Tianjin, and to Shanghai via Fukuoka. The Osaka-Tianjin services is scheduled to begin on 19 May, 3 times a week (increasing to 4 per week from July), utilizing Boeing 767-300 aircraft in a 217 seat, 2class configuration. The Osaka-Fukuoka-Shanghai services is scheduled to begin on 18 May, twice a week (with the Fukuoka-Shanghai services 3 times a week), utilizing Boeing 767-300 aircraft in a 217 seat, 2 class configuration. Tianjin is a big industrial city with a population of 9 million. The number of Japanese firms, mainly in the bicycle, electric and machine industry, which have entered Tianjin has reached almost 700 (as of December 1996). Shanghai is also the largest Chinese city known for its commerce and industry. Shanghai along with Beijing is said to be the gateway to China, conncecting the domestic network of Southern China to the international network world-wide. With the above additions, ANA's total service to China has increased from its current 5 cities-Beijing, Dalian, Shanghai, Qingdao and Hong Kong-to 6 cities.
