Kiyotsu Gorge
Kiyotsu Gorge: Breathtaking Scenery at the Nationally Designated Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument
Kiyotsu Gorge stands alongside Kurobe Gorge and Osugidani Valley as one of Japan’s three great canyons. A treasure house of academic resources, the gorge was made part of Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park in September 1949.
The precipitous stone cliffs either side of a river create one of Japan’s best V-shaped gorges. It has also been designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The surface of the rocks has a majestic columnar joint structure. Their contrast with the clear, rapid flow of the Kiyotsu River creates an excellent dynamism, leaving a lasting impression on visitors.
