Hachimantai Dragon Eye (Kagami Pond)

The mysterious setting that takes on the appearance of a dragon eye on Mount Hachimantai
Every year between late May to mid-June, Kagami Pond located on Mount Hachimantai in Senboku City, Miyagi Prefecture, creates a rare natural phenomenon that takes on the appearance of a dragon eye. As a great amount of snow melting in spring pours into the pond, its center rises by buoyancy, which then starts to thaw in such a way as to resemble an eye of a dragon. You may be lucky enough to witness this mysterious vista only seen during this time.
Hachimantai Aspite Line
The Hachimantai Aspite Line is a mountain driving road that runs between Kazuno City in Akita Prefecture and Hachimantai City in Iwate Prefecture. In spring, the road is cleared of snow forming impressively high walls of snow on both sides, creating Japan's longest scenic snow corridor spanning 27 kilometers. It offers panoramic views of seasonal landscapes of Mount Hachimantai, which are spectacular especially during the season of fresh greenery in summer and when colorful autumn foliage adorns the mountain. The road is open from mid-April through early November, but it may be closed all day during icy road conditions.
