Hossawa Falls

Enjoy the Hossawa Falls Winter Festival and hot springs in the village of Hinohara in Tama, Tokyo

The only waterfall in Tokyo selected as one of the Top 100 Waterfalls in Japan, Hossawa Falls in the village of Hinohara is 62 meters tall and has four stages in all. The deep hole at the lowest stage (length of about 26 meters) has a mysterious atmosphere and is said to be inhabited by a large serpent since ancient times. The waterfall is also famous for freezing in winter, and the Hossawa Falls Winter Festival is held from December to February every year.

Hossawa Falls Winter Festival

The powerful Hossawa Falls frozen in the air surrounded by snow-covered trees is a sight to behold. The mountain path to the waterfall is also covered with snow, which is a rare sight in Tokyo. During the winter festival period, various events are held such as a photo contest and the Hokkori Market (held on specific dates), displaying ice statues and selling local specialty products. Great prizes are offered in the Ice Fall Quiz to guess the day when the Hossawa Falls freeze over the most.

Hinohara Onsen Center Kazuma-no-Yu

After visiting the waterfall, head to Hinohara Onsen Center Kazuma-no-Yu. The hot spring in Hinohara village is famous for making the skin fresh and dewy as if you have become younger, gaining the nickname “hot spring for eternal youth." At the hot spring center, you can enjoy various types of baths from open-air baths to saunas, and also shop for specialty products of Hinohara.
