Shirataki Falls

Savor the beauty of nature during a sightseeing visit to Gokase by enjoying Miyazaki's "Shirataki Falls"

Miyazaki’s Shirataki Falls is located in the town of Gokase in Nishiusuki-gun, Miyazaki Prefecture. Shirataki Falls, a recommended spot to savor the beauty of nature when visiting Gokase for sightseeing, is at an altitude of 900 m above sea level and has height of the column of water of 60 m. The beautiful sight of the sheet of water, which resembles a white cloth draped over the cliff, takes on a completely different appearance in each season. The contrast between the white falls and the autumn foliage is particularly spectacular, attracting many photographers and tourists every autumn.

Every year in early November, which is peak season for fall foliage, the "Shirataki Momiji Festival" is held and it includes a bazaar with a "mochitsuki" (rice-cake pounding) event and salt-grilled "yamame" (landlocked salmon). In winter, the waterfall freezes, creating an other-worldly scene that hardly seems like Japan.
