Baggage Provisions Based on U.S. and Canadian Law

If your flight ticket states that your point of departure, point of arrival, or final destination is in the U.S. (including U.S. territories) or Canada, it is decided whose baggage provisions (free baggage allowance and charges) are applied based on U.S. and Canadian Law. The baggage provisions of that airline will then apply to your flight ticket's entire itinerary.

Itineraries Containing International Flights

Step 1

The first airline that publishes its baggage provisions through ATPCO (Airline Tariff Publishing Company), based on your ticket itinerary.

Step 2

  • If the airline selected in Step 1 applies the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) policy
    The Most Significant Carrier (MSC) in the outbound that is defined as the leg that ends with the stopover location furthest away from the point of origin.
    (For codeshare flights, the marketing carrier will be the MSC.)

  • If the airline selected in Step 1 does not apply the Most Significant Carrier (MSC) policy
    The airline selected in Step 1.
    (For codeshare flights, it will be the marketing carrier.)

MOST SIGNIFICAN CARRIER (MSC)

  • For travel between two or more IATA areas, the carrier performing carriage on the first sector that crosses from one area to another.

  • For travel between IATA Tariff sub-areas, the carrier performing carriage on the first sector that crosses from one sub-area to another.

  • For travel within an IATA Tariff sub-area, the carrier performing carriage on the first international sector.
