Banknotes and coins used in Taiwan
The unit of currency used in Taiwan is the Taiwanese Yuan. It is referred to as 元 (yuan) in short. Written also as the New Taiwan dollar (NTDollar) or 圓 (yuan), and commonly called 塊 (kuai) in spoken language. The exchange rate as of March 18, 2024 is 1 yuan, approx. JPY4.71. The amount in JPY is equivalent to about 4 times the value in NTD.
Taiwan's Value-Added Tax (VAT) is 5%. There is a VAT refund system where VAT may be refunded to travellers with foreign nationality who have purchased goods worth at least NT$2,000 at an authorized store, e.g., department store, in one day. It applies to taxable goods used in daily life that can be carried out of the country and does not apply to food products or products used while staying in Taiwan. You can apply for a refund at E-VAT Kiosks or tax-refund counters at airport/port terminals. You need your passport to apply. A service fee of 20% is deducted from the amount of refund calculated. Generally, if the purchase amount is NT$48,000 or less, a "small-amount tax refund" applies and you can get a tax refund on the same day at the service counter in the store where you purchased the goods.
Tipping is not customary in Taiwan. However, you can give a reasonable tip if you receive considerable assistance. Such tips should start at 100 yuan.
Note that tipping is not required at upscale restaurants and luxury hotels as a roughly 10 to 15% service charge is added to your bill.
