Taiwan is warm throughout the year. The main island of Taiwan consists of the subtropical zone in the north and tropical zone in the south, divided by the Tropic of Cancer which cuts across the center of the island. The country has a long summer and short winter, with no clear distinctions in seasons. Typhoons pass through from summer to fall.

  • Spring (March to May): There is a large temperature drop in mornings and evenings and it is hot when the weather is clear.
  • Summer (June to September): It is very humid and quite hot. Sun stroke and UV protection are essential when going out. It is cold indoors because the air conditioners are on. There are squalls and many typhoons.
  • Autumn (October to November): Cool in the morning and evening, but hot during the day.
  • Winter (December to February): It feels colder than the temperature suggests, although not as cold as Japan. There are sometimes cold waves for a period in midwinter when it becomes as cold as Japan. It rains a lot in the north and east. The temperature in the south is mild.

Currency and Exchange Rate, Tax, Currency exchange, Tip

Currency and Exchange Rate

Banknotes and coins used in Taiwan

The unit of currency used in Taiwan is the Taiwanese Yuan. It is referred to as 元 (yuan) in short. Written also as the New Taiwan dollar (NTDollar) or 圓 (yuan), and commonly called 塊 (kuai) in spoken language. The exchange rate as of March 18, 2024 is 1 yuan, approx. JPY4.71. The amount in JPY is equivalent to about 4 times the value in NTD.

Tax

Taiwan's Value-Added Tax (VAT) is 5%. There is a VAT refund system where VAT may be refunded to travellers with foreign nationality who have purchased goods worth at least NT$2,000 at an authorized store, e.g., department store, in one day. It applies to taxable goods used in daily life that can be carried out of the country and does not apply to food products or products used while staying in Taiwan. You can apply for a refund at E-VAT Kiosks or tax-refund counters at airport/port terminals. You need your passport to apply. A service fee of 20% is deducted from the amount of refund calculated. Generally, if the purchase amount is NT$48,000 or less, a "small-amount tax refund" applies and you can get a tax refund on the same day at the service counter in the store where you purchased the goods.

Tip

Tipping is not customary in Taiwan. However, you can give a reasonable tip if you receive considerable assistance. Such tips should start at 100 yuan.
Note that tipping is not required at upscale restaurants and luxury hotels as a roughly 10 to 15% service charge is added to your bill.

Voltage and plug

Voltage

The voltage in Taiwan is 110 V, 60 Hz, and plugs are type A, same as Japan. As the voltage in Japan is 100 V, 50/60 Hz, most electronics from Japan can be used in Taiwan, but it is better to use a transformer with precision devices like computers and digital cameras. Although rare, there are some type C or type O sockets, so it is best to have a set of adapter plugs handy.

Video and DVD

Video and DVD

When buying video software on DVD or Blu-ray, be sure to check the television encoding system and region code. The television encoding system for Taiwan is NTSC, the same as Japan. Blu-rays are region code A, the same as Japan. DVDs are region 2 in Japan and region 3 in Taiwan. Software cannot be played on a DVD or blue-ray player with a different region code, but it can be played if either the software itself or the DVD or Blu-ray player is region-free.
